You may be careful about the cleanser you use, the products you put on your face, and how often you touch your skin.
But what about the towel you use after you wash your face?
That is something I started paying attention to years ago, and once I did, I never went back.
Every time I cleanse my face, I use a fresh disposable towel. I use one in the morning and another one at night.
Once I cleanse my face, I want whatever touches my clean skin afterward to be clean too.
It is a small part of my routine, but it makes sense to me.
What Happens After You Use a Face Towel?
Once you dry your face, that towel has already come into contact with moisture, oil, skin cells, and anything else that may have remained on the surface of your skin.
If you hang it back up, it sits there until you use it again.
Bathrooms can also stay warm and humid, which means a damp towel may take some time to dry completely.
For years, I never gave much thought to any of that. A face towel was just a face towel.
Eventually, I started looking at it differently.
I was taking the time to cleanse my skin, but then I was finishing by putting something against my face that I had already used.
That no longer made sense to me.
I am not saying that a used face towel is the reason someone has acne. Acne is not that simple.
But when you have acne-prone skin, I think it is worth looking at the everyday things that come into regular contact with your face.
A face towel is easy to overlook because it is not technically a skincare product, but it still touches your skin every time you wash it.
Why I Started Using Disposable Face Towels
Years ago, I used the Clean Towels brand, and that introduced me to the idea of using a fresh disposable towel each time I washed my face.
I do not use that particular brand anymore, but I never stopped using disposable face towels.
I like knowing exactly what I am reaching for after I cleanse.
There is no towel hanging beside the sink that I have to remember using earlier. I do not have to think about when it was last washed or whether it dried completely.
I take a new towel, use it, and I am finished with it.
For me, disposable towels are simply more convenient than keeping washable face towels in rotation.
If you decide to use them too, I would pay attention to the towel itself rather than assuming any disposable towel will feel good on your face.
I prefer one that feels soft against the skin. I also do not need fragrance or anything extra added to a towel that is only there to dry my face.
It does not need to do anything special.
It just needs to do its job.
Your Towel Should Not Be Another Exfoliating Step
There is also a difference between drying your face and rubbing your face dry.
After I cleanse, I gently pat my skin.
I am not dragging the towel across my cheeks or rubbing trying to get my face extra dry.
Your cleanser has already done the cleaning.
The towel does not need to help remove oil, dead skin, or anything else.
This matters even more when you have an active breakout that feels tender. There is no benefit in adding unnecessary friction to the area, especially when you are also trying to protect your skin barrier.
I would rather keep that part of the routine simple.
Rinse your cleanser away, gently remove the excess water, and move on to the next step.
Look at the Habit, Not Just the Products
When women think about what may be affecting their skin, skincare products usually get most of the attention.
And of course they matter.
But your routine includes more than what comes out of a bottle.
Sometimes it is worth looking at the ordinary habits around your skincare too.
What are you doing before you cleanse?
What is touching your skin afterward?
Are there things you have been doing for years simply because you never thought to question them?
My face towel was one of those things.
Changing it did not suddenly answer every question I had about my skin, and I would never present it that way.
It was simply one habit I could change easily, and once I thought about it, I did not see a reason to go back.
So if you have been drying your face with the same towel several times before replacing it, think about trying something different.
For me, a fresh disposable towel morning and evening has become part of how I care for my skin.
Clean face. Clean towel. Every time.
